Monarch Butterfly Numbers Double (and fresh photos of the 2025 migration)!

Writer: Court Whelan, Ph.D.Court Whelan, Ph.D.

It's official, the 2024/2025 monarch colonies have nearly doubled and it feels oh-so-good. I was guiding photo expeditions and conservation travel journies in the overwintering colonies this year, for multiple trips, and can attest that the numbers looked bigger this year, too. However, we can never be sure until the numbers are fully tallied.

Now that the numbers are out, our work continues. We must continue to analyze what's working and what we have to do to continue this upward trend.

Top of the list is planting native milkweed. There are many websites you can use to look up your native milkweed and purchase plants like this one from Monarch Joint Venture and it's more important than ever we continue to strive to save the monarch and it's amazing migration.

We also have local communities in Mexico thank for this good news, as they are instrumental in safeguarding their winter habitat. This comes by way of reforestation, forest conservation, and ecotourism.

Our educators across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico are also instrumental. Without their dedication to educate and inspire our next generation, we would be lost.

In addition, the great organizations that work day and night to coordinate efforts, research the monarch, and accurately report numbers, like WWF, Monarch Joint Venture, and MonarchWastch.org are lynchpins in the entire equation.

But finally, a big thanks owed to you and the many individuals that spend countless efforts getting to know, love, and save the monarchs through traveling to the sanctuaries, staying informed with updates like this one, and directly supporting the conservation and education work.

It takes a village and I'm thankful for everyone playing a part. I'm thankful we can still find awe in this wild world of ours and thankful for the monarch.

I hope you enjoy the fresh photos from this season and revel in the great news, as I am. If you wish to learn more about the monarch, its migration, or conservation travel, please do write me back and I look forward to continuing the discussion.

Cheers, and be well,

Court
